There are 3 water safety awards we work towards, during your time at Aqua Bubbles Swim School.
All 3 teach water danger awareness, self-rescue techniques and vital survival skills. These include swimming in clothes and practicing those essential skills, without goggles.
These awards have been developed in partnership with the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) and the RLSS (Royal Lifesaving Society UK).
As a school, we are passionate about teaching these skills from a young age, and we want our swimmers to be just as safe and confident out there in the real world, as they are here with us in the pool! So every stage will take part in 'Water Safety Week' at least twice per year. We don’t offer this as an extra, this is already set into our lesson plans.
Below is a breakdown of what is required from our swimmers, to achieve each of the awards.
Swimmers will learn basic water safety awareness and survival techniques. For example, floating, treading water, submerging and resurfacing, without goggles.
This award should be performed in shoulder-depth water, without goggle and regular swimwear
🫧 Perform a swivel entry
🫧Jump in, rotate 180 degrees, and travel back to the side
🫧Float on back for 30 seconds
🫧Fully Submerge, exhale emptying lungs, & resurface
🫧Log roll from floating on the front, to floating on the back
🫧Tread water in an upright position for 10 seconds, NO equipment
🫧Perform a signal for help on back, whilst holding on a float, or other floatation equipment
🫧Exit the water, with NO support
🫧Show an understanding of basic water safety
Swimmers will be introduced to swimming in clothes. The key water safety skills from the RNLI & the RLSS is essential personal survival techniques, such as the Heat Escape Lessening Position (HELP)
The award should be performed in water of full reach depth, without goggles and light clothing (shorts & t shirt, light weight PJs)
🫧Perform a fall in entry (head protection)
🫧Float on back for 60 seconds, without float. Be able to explain why this is important
🫧Tread water for 30 seconds, using eggbeater
🫧Perform a rotation of 360 degrees whilst treading water. NO floats
🫧Signal for help whilst treading water. NO floats
🫧Swim on back for 10m, log roll onto back & rest for 60seconds. Return upright and tread water again
🫧 Swim on front for 10m, log roll and swim 10m on back to a floating object (float)
🫧Swim 10m towards the side of pool, using long arm front paddle (survival stroke)
🫧Fully submerge to the pool floor. Rhythmically bounce from the floor to surface to take a breath, re-submerge. Repeat 4 times.
🫧Demonstrate the Heat Escape Lessening Position with a float
🫧Climb out from the side, without use of steps
🫧Recite and show understanding of the four key water safety messages (answer questions verbally asked by teacher)
This is the 3rd and final water safety award our swimmers will achieve. They will fully understand how to perform safe self-rescue in different water situations, and what to do if they, or anyone else, fall into water unexpectedly.
This award should be performed in water in full reach depth, without goggles and in full length clothing (trousers, long sleeved top, long PJs)
🫧Perform a straddle jump entry
🫧Complete an obstacle course of submerging and resurfacing under and through objects, collecting objects from the floor. This must include at least one head first surface dive, and one feet first surface dive
🫧 Tread water for 2minutes without floats, rotate 360 once
🫧Float 90 seconds, without floats, with minimal movement in simulated rough/moving water
🫧Swim distance of 200m
🫧Swim 50m using a recognised stroke to a float, stop in deep water, signal for help
🫧Perform the Heat Escape Lessening Position for 3 minutes with a life jacket
🫧Perform the Huddle Position, with 3 others, NO floatation equipment; rotate and signal for help
🫧Climb out from the side, NO steps, rail or other support
🫧Perform a shout and signal rescue
🫧Share 3 faces about the effects of cold water shock and show understanding of how to manage those effects
🫧Give 2 example of local hazards, and how to minimise those risk when around them
